I’m very grateful for all the compliments I got in tags on the Davepetasprite^2 piece. I saw several comments about the colours and lighting, and specifically about how I handled Davepeta’s palette:
so, Davepetasprite^2 does have one of the most garish, unharmonious palettes I’ve ever seen on any character (sorry Davepeta). When you’re faced with a palette like that, you’ve got to cheat your way around it by tweaking it. A lot.
Davepeta’s canon colours are:
But these are the colours I used in the painting:
1. The eye-hurting quality of the original colours comes from them being at 100% saturation, so I desaturated them first of all. This is all-important in my opinion, unless you’re going for that garish clashing neon look.
2. You can see I didn’t use anywhere near the “correct” green or orange. The key here is the intermediate colour, yellow. After identifying yellow as the unifying colour, I pulled all the colours closer to it, creating an analogous palette that spans from red-orange to green. Without any blue or purple in the palette, yellow becomes a sort of “reference point”, causing one to perceive all the colours around it as less yellow than they actually are. That’s the reason the colours still look “right”.
