When you broke but you woke

Wait… Guys what?

Is this what you guys think it means when GMO comes up in conversation?

Do you know what else is a GMO?

Dogs. Literally ALL dogs have had their genetics modified to make them more docile, loyal, trusting, energetic, obedient ect.

Ears of corn used to be the size of your thumb. Through selective ‘breeding’ we chose the strains of corn that were the biggest, fastest growing, most resilient ect. Ect.

THAT is a GMO. I don’t know where the idea that genetic modification meant they’re injecting your food stuffs with chemicals to change its DNA. That’s not how it works.

However, they ARE spraying your veggies with pesticides and that is something you should be worried about.

Companies like Monsanto are evil. But not because they are breeding crops to feed more people. But because they’re monopolizing the farming market, sueing farmers who share a geographic area and have some of the same strains of crops in their fields because of unavoidable cross pollination and lying about their business practices.

This is Normal Borlaug. In 1942 he received his Ph. D in plant pathology and genetics. In Mexico, he developed semi-dwarf, high-yield, disease resistant varieties of wheat. A genetically modified food. He introduced these to Mexico, Pakistan and India, resulting in double the wheat yields in a 5 year span. In 1970, Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, for saving one billion lives from starvation, and contributing to world peace through increasing the world food supply.

Genetically modified food is great.

This, a thousand fucking times this. Privilege is spouting and spreading pseudo-science bullshit you saw on your Facebook feed or on Twitter because unlike people in drought and famine prone areas of the world, you have the option to do just that. Those other parts of the world that don’t have the benefit of a food surplus and can’t pick and choose what they eat depend on GMOs to not die of starvation or watch their children waste away.

I despise Monsanto as much as the next person and if they ever go out of business, I’ll be the first to dance a jig, but condemning GMOs just because one megacorp is a pile of shitbags is beyond idiotic. If scientists can create new strains of seeds that can withstand disease, pests, all while yielding more foodstuff, then we should be throwing our support behind them.

Also, “They are feeding us chemicals!” is a fundamentally ridiculous statement.

Why?

As a chemist, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret:

Everything is chemicals.

THANKS!

BTW, the correct term is “Biotechnology”, and ggenetically modified bacteria are what’s making all your medicine, espercially modern advanced cancer fightey stuff.

Seriously, why don’t people understand this. Any of this. Why isn’t this taught in school? We’ve been genetically modifying things for as long as we’ve been around. You think you can’t buy non-GMO food if you don’t have money? Try you can’t buy non-GMO food PERIOD.

Do you like seedless fruits? Watermelon, grapes? Because it’s genetic modification that does that.

You couldn’t really eat tomatoes if they weren’t genetically modified, because sometime way back when, this guy bred them so that they didn’t turn COMPLETELY to mush when they ripen.

I bet you’re not complaining about your pot being a GMO, but guess what????? IT IS!!!! SURPRISE!!!!

There is a difference between selective breeding and direct genetic manipulation. Because when you do the latter, there are no natural failsafes and you might accidentally break stuff you otherwise couldn’t - like that one unfortunate test crop of GMO corn in Germany that looked and smelled completely normal, but stopped your stomach from realizing it’s full. Several deer corpses were found in the surrounding area, deer that had literally eaten themselves to death on the GMO corn, their stomachs ruptured.

Plants are highly complex things - and most phytohormones haven’t been researched yet (and scientists keep discovering new ones), and we just don’t know yet how they can or cannot affect human or animal organisms, especially when brought completely out of whack by making a plant do what it naturally never, ever would, selective breeding or no.

And here’s a link to why the hell you do not feed deer corn and why it is corn that kills them not the GMO parked although good luck getting any corn that’s not GMO to be honest especially if you live in a western Society.

http://www.farmanddairy.com/columns/feeding-corn-to-deer-could-be-death-sentence/14324.html

Actually it’s unlikely and unprovable that it was the GMO in the corn that killed the deer more likely it was the fact that you should never feed deer corn because they do not have the proper digestive system in order to digest it the rest of this post was pretty much the standard typical fear-mongering GMOs are terrible that the everybody else was talking about.

Also you seem to be under the impression that putting plants into labs and messing around with them in a laboratory setting is new it is not it is not even remotely new we’ve been doing this for a long time GMOs are not new they are here to stay and potentially could solve many Hunger issues if people would quit fear-mongering.

Every time I see this, it reminds of the post that I saw where someone thought that the only purpose of soap was to open the pores so the water could wash out the dirt. Same level of inaccuracy, higher level of fear mongering.

I mostly just think about the fact that people like the op and the “STOP EATING HONEY YOU ARE KILLING BEES!!!” post from the other day are the same people who think eating quinoa is healthy and beneficial and ignore the fact that it’s … y'know, contributing to the starvation of poor people who depended on it as a crop before the “clean eating!!!! no gmos!!!!!” people decided it was the holy grail.

Fun fact about quinoa: Although it’s delicious and very in right now, it’s also chiefly imported from South America, where it was previously the most stable source of protein for those growing it. Now it gets exported to America where we can spend a bajillion dollars on one tiny little pack of it. Even ignoring the social issues, importing a fancy grain to sell at a huge mark-up aids pollution.

Another fun fact about quinoa: Most people eat it because it’s supposed to be healthy, a claim almost completely derived from the fact that it is a complete protein.

Yet another fun fact about quinoa: Who the fuck in America isn’t getting protein like seriously you know what else is a complete protein? Rice and beans. You can eat rice for dinner and peanuts for a snack and congrats you got all your amino acids. There are combinations of food that people have been eating for centuries that contain all the amino acids you need. Srsly wtf quinoa is not special.

One last fun fact about quinoa: It doesn’t even taste that great and if you think it does then you might be a pod person because seriously now it’s really nothing special.
