Right, I’ve had enough. LGBT Community rant under the cut…

Hello there friend.

For the sake of my over active brain not being able to sleep tonight thinking about this post I’d like to share my views.

I’d like to start by saying that I too hate LGBT people solely being known for being LGBT and I’ve said before in videos and on panels that I don’t want to be known as ‘that trans guy’. (I think I may have touched on this on the LGBTQ+ panel at summer in the city 2014, you can find it on Youtube!)

I’ve always tried to be transparent with my interests and not ever video or every tweet is about LGBT stuff. I hope? I think the problem I find is that I feel very pressured to post LGBT content as that is what I set my channel up to do and that’s about 95% of my audience. Now unlike the other YT’ers you mentioned I don’t do this full time and my videos show a tiny fraction of my life. Pretty much the ONLY time I enter ‘trans world’ is at my Gender Identity Clinic appointments and on the internet. Does that sound weird? Haha!

Being transgender is definitely not all I am. I do post a lot of trans content but that’s just because I have a passion to help others in areas that I struggled with, along side helping educate other people on trans issues too. I’ll be the first one to admit that I like to take a ‘trans perspective’ on a lot of topics, for example National HIV testing week- I spoke about the importance (and struggles) of testing from a trans POV. I did this because I thought it was important, there wasn’t enough people talking about it and that it would be interesting to non trans people.

In my opinion my channel is just a complete mind fuck of trans topics, stupid videos with my boyfriend and other lovely people, and some other weird shit sprinkled on top!

Now for something I know for sure other YouTubers struggle with- trying something new. Occasionally I talk about arty things, design things or video game things because I’d like to hope people might watch. These videos don’t get a lot of views and my channel actually suffers as a result of making videos I really love sometimes.

What I’m trying to say is fuck yeah there’s a lot more to me than trans stuff and fuck yeah I’m going to still post about non trans stuff like video games and graphic design. But at the same time I don’t want my view count and subscriber count to suffer because if the time comes where the LGBTQ+ community is facing difficult times I want to be able to broadcast something powerful that will reach as many people possible in hopes to gain attention to that cause or start a discussion with not only us LGBTQ+ people but cis and straight people too.

I hope this doesn’t seem uber defensive- I still agree with you that it sucks, I just hope this explains how I feel about what I do. :)

Much love!

Alex
