Just as there are reasons someone might identify as bi and not pan, there are reasons why someone might identify as pan and not bi. (Of course, feel free to ID as both!)
Some people identify as pan because they want people to know right off the bat that they are attracted to ALL genders. Maybe they want to draw attention to the existence of multiple genders (that also goes for polysexual people.)
Some people identify as bi because there is an established community and history associated with the word. Maybe they use the word because they aren’t necessarily attracted to all genders.
But here’s why I identify as bi.
Yes, I do appreciate and enjoy learning about the history of our community. But I have the potential to be attracted to pretty much anyone. Boys, girls, genderfluid people, agender people, maverique people, etc. So why don’t I just call myself pan?
Because it’s important for me, as a nonbinary person attracted to both binary and nonbinary genders, to call attention to the fact that BI DOES NOT EQUAL TWO. It can. Sometimes it does. But there are bi people, like me, who are attracted to 3, 4, 5, 10+ genders.
Because bi doesn’t just mean men and women. It can and often does include nonbinary genders.
Because (to me), bisexual is a more fluid label. Bi means that I can be attracted to my own gender and 1 other, or that I can be attracted to every gender except my own, etc etc.
But most importantly, it’s the label I feel comfortable using. And that should really be the only thing that matters.
