It’s okay to be slow when you’re making art.

So I kind of wanted to make a post about this.

I know some of you look around, and you see all these artists making such beautiful art in time spans of like an hour or a few hours, and then you look at your work and you get so demoralized because you’re taking so long.

I’m here to tell you that that’s perfectly okay. You’re not other artists. You are you, and your work defines you. If you need to take 10 hours, or even days to complete your art piece, it is okay, because it’s yours. You’re doing your best to make your art what you want it to be, and just because you can’t do it in a few hours like other artists do, it doesn’t make the value of your work any less. In fact, your patience and perseverance is absolutely admirable.

Take your time. You’re using your hands to create something that you love. Don’t let the people around you that you see hinder that in any way. You will definitely get faster in time, but if you give up now, thinking that you’ll always be this slow when you make art, you’ll never reach that stage. This applies not only to art, but also to other skills that you’re trying to pick up.

So look at what you yourself are doing, instead of looking around at others. Don’t worry too much, and enjoy yourself in the process of creation and learning! :)

YOOOOO THIS IS ACTUALLY REALLY GREAT!!

Back when I was still just starting out on, like, taking my art seriously and making drawings with full lineart and coloring and all that stuff, I would always get so discouraged whenever I’d see other artists like, just pumping out these amazing doodles like almost every hour; while me in the meanwhile? It would take me ONE TO TWO HOURS just to do a rough sketch of one character (An additional hour for additional characters). Then like 6-8 MORE hours for lineart and full coloring. Sometimes even more.

Like an entire day would be wasted away with me just making one artpiece while other artists have made dozens. And… that sucks, yanno?

But yanno something else? One day I stopped comparing. I stopped caring and comparing about other artists and my art to their art, respectively. I just went on making my own art because it was fun and it was what made me happy! And then I noticed over time, that I got quicker and quicker with my art!!

What used to take me hours to just sketch, now just takes me around five to fifteen minutes to draw multiple characters at once!! The thing is, whenever you draw, you’re making progress, however slow, but even in that slow progress, you’re actually getting much better at your art than you know it!! Doodling your faves in cutieass shenanigans or your totally gay OTP being totally gay for each other? DRAW THAT SHIT. DRAW IT WHENEVER THE INSPIRATION HITS YOU. DRAW IT AT THE BACK OF YOUR SCIENCE CLASS NOTEBOOK OR ON YOUR SKETCHBOOK, THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU DRAW.

Because while you’re drawing, you’re finding more and more ways to actually make your work easier; you’re discovering different techniques and styles that are unique to you, and you only!!

I honestly hope OP doesn’t mind this p longass ramble, but this just really speaks to me on a personal level!!

Because if I had given up being depressed with how “low my drawing productivity” was, I wouldn’t be happy with my art today.

And I’m still getting better! I try to draw everyday, and that means I’m going to get better everyday. And I’m sure as hell that applies to you, too!!

Stay determined, everybody!! Try to keep in mind that you’ll never find yourself where you want to be if you don’t strive to get there.

I believe that your art’s only going to get better, friend!! And I believe in you!! Stay strong, you’ll get there someday! And maybe even farther!!
