So the reason why I actually got interested in watching Steven Universe is cause IT’S A SHOW ABOUT ROCKS AND BRUH I LOVE ROCKS. Basically, while watching I was on the lookout for what geology-related stuff I could insert into the characters and this post turned out way longer than what was in my head. I hope other people will find these stuffs interesting too!! Cause studying minerals irl is actually super fun and rewarding
1) Pearl’s obsession with all things neat and orderly. The series constantly reminds us that of the three gems, Pearl and Amethyst are the polar opposites, with Garnet being somewhat the mediator between them. Garnet can be a logical and rational disciplinarian like Pearl but she can also be wild and wreck stuff like Amethyst. One line from Pearl really struck me, in one episode where she was staring at a pile of school supplies and she complained about the lack of symmetry. Symmetry is a huge deal when studying minerals. While there are some amorphous pearls, the ideal pearl is shaped like a sphere, which is the most symmetrical object there is (along with the cube). Garnet is a dodecahedral mineral, which is isometric like the sphere but has a slightly lower level of symmetry than the cube. Then we have amethyst, which is a prismatic hexagonal (the shape of the hundreds of spiky crystals Amethyst has in her room), which is the least symmetric of the three. So literally if we would rate them in order of symmetry (or level of chaos), it would go: Pearl, Garnet, then Amethyst.
2) Sapphire and Ruby make the perfect fusion because ((surprise surprise!!)) they’re the same mineral! Sapphire and ruby are the blue and red variants of the mineral corundum. (Meaning that it’s the same mineral that have just been contaminated with different elements, which caused the change in color.) That’s why they’re so compatible. This isn’t to say, ofc, that their love would be different if they were different gems. It’s just to say that they work well together because they are literally by the human definition of the term: soulmates uwu
4) Going by that logic, that would mean that if Steven were to fuse with any of the crystal gems he’d be most compatible with Amethyst. Rose and amethyst are the pink and purple variants of the mineral quartz, respectively.
5) The corundum is also the toughest mineral second only to diamonds. Must be why Garnet is so effing badass
6) Speaking of Garnet, she can swim in lava because garnet is an ultramafic igneous / medium-high grade metamorphic mineral. Meaning it’s actually in magma temperatures where garnet is formed and is at its toughest
7) But again, going by that logic, that would mean that Peridot should also be able to swim in lava as peridot is also an ultramafic mineral that forms in the hottest of magma temperatures. I’m kinda scared of her being able to do that on top of her other abilities but also I’d be sorely disappointed if she isn’t.
8) Such a shame the writers chose to go with jeweller’s terms of the gems instead of the scientific terms tbh. Cause if they didn’t then Peridot would be named Olivine and it can be some terrible punchline for the show. “she’s olivine bc shE’S OLIVE GREEN. HEH.” ((gosh im so sorry for that))
That’s about it for now. It’s actually really fun doing this and I hope there’ll be more scenes with Lapis and Jasper in the future so i can analyze them too
