This, for serious.

I mean a lot of the advocacy for not drawing the gems with breasts comes from a well intentioned place (they’re nonbinary, they’re not from Earth, etc). There is the idea that drawing them with breasts genders them, but it doesn’t. Because:

1) A lot of. Nonbinary people. Have. Breasts.

2) The idea that a body with breasts = feminine while a body without breasts = neutral is in the same vein as the overall tendency in society to treat cis male experiences and bodies as the default and every other experience/body as marked and deviating from the “norm”.

So when you say “giving the gems breasts is cissexist because you’re associating them with girls”… no, actually, YOU are associating breasts with girls by assuming that’s the only reason anyone would draw the gems with them. And I find it hard to ignore the misdirected misogyny in fandom’s attempts to drive out portrayals of features that are commonly considered “feminine”.

Draw the gems however you want, but can the fandom at large quit it with the pointless body policing. If you care about nonbinary and otherwise marginalised representation, you can start by not defaulting to “gay” as an end-all-be-all descriptor of nonbinary characters with a completely different gender and sexuality system.
