illyanapryde:

i’m still kind of shocked over how absolutely awful was natasha’s characterization in age of ultron

it’s not like it was just one particularly bad tv show episode or comicbook issue where she was terribly written by one bad writer even though she’s usually a well written character.

it’s this huge ass movie, the sequel to the third highest grossing movie in the world, produced by this big, famous company, and i just can’t believe dozens, even hundreds of executives approved of that shit. mostly i can’t believe thousands of little girls are going to watch that movie and see the only woman in a team of 6 avengers do barely anything except for pining over the hulk

worst of all, the movie was written and directed by a man who notoriously claims to be a feminist and is constantly praised for that, and yet had the audacity to reduce one of marvel’s most popular and incredible female characters to a ridiculous love interest. a man who won’t shut the fuck up about writing “strong female characters” because “people still ask him that question”, and yet he took an actually strong, extraordinary female character and gave her a role of nothing more than a love interest, someone to calm down the hulk when she wasn’t too busy blatantly flirting with him in the most cringe-worthy of scenes, and oh, having him fall with his face on her boobs.

not to mention that marvel president kevin feige once deflected a question about a black widow movie by claiming she already has good roles in other movies and also promised her backstory would be better explored in aou, which was clearly a bullshit promise since all we got was a short flashback that served no purpose in the storyline except for revealing that nat was sterilized in the red room so that she could later bring that up in a scene with banner in order to compare not being able to have children to being a monster. yeah, that actually happened. written and directed by a man who unbelievably thinks he’s a feminist.

i’m not talking about one shitty moment in a certain particular scene of the movie, i’m talking about pretty much all of her scenes. there was barely anything that didn’t suck. as if the romantic plot wasn’t shitty enough in itself, she was also turned into almost a damsel in distress when captured and thrown into a cell, even though actual natasha romanoff is more likely to be the one who’d have to rescue any of the other avengers from that situation–but of course she was the one captured, because she’s the only woman in the team and they needed a male hero to save her.

which leads me to: how do you manage to fuck up so bad the only female character in a team of six avengers. it’s already a pathetic ratio of 5:1, it honestly feels like they made a special effort to be even more awful this time around by also destroying that only woman’s characterization. what i took from the movie is that marvel studios literally does not give a shit about natasha romanoff, and neither does joss whedon, otherwise he would’ve bothered to write her in a way that any decent human being who has ever read a single well-written black widow comic ever would know she’d be like.

and don’t you fucking dare tell me this isn’t whedon’s fault because “he doesn’t make all the decisions”, or because “he’s just following orders”, i’m losing track of all the weak ass excuses i’ve heard. catws is there to prove that she can be well-written, she can be a great, well-developed character, when in the hands of better writers and directors who know how to explore her potential (or should i say who care about doing that), so it’s not like marvel is set out to destroy natasha romanoff otherwise she’d have been steve’s lovesick teenager romantic interest in catws like she was banner’s in aou. so yeah, this is on whedon. i’m 300% done with people trying to defend the shit he does by blaming it on marvel and then defending marvel too because apparently none of these white males are supposed to be blamed for what they’re doing.

you’d think the last straw had happened a while ago, but in case you didn’t think it had, it was age of ultron, no question. all i got from that movie was that any natasha romanoff fan in this website cares more about her than every single marvel executive involved in aou put together.
