I watched “Waltz with Bashir”

loutrelaloutre:

It is an animation documentary made by Ari Folman on the Lebanon war, in which he fought. Be careful, this post will contain NSFW pictures.

One night, Ari’s friend Boaz tells him one dream he keeps having, caused by reminiscence of the war. As his friend explain his dream, Ari find himself surprised that he doesn’t remember a thing from the war, 24 years later.

This leads Ari into a search of what happened to him during this war, as the dream of his friend wake something deep within him. The story of Ari is intense and uncovers the atrocities of this war. Pictures are, in the order, 19 year-old Ari ; the evacuation of woundeds and bodies he does one day ; an attacking kid killed by the platoon of one of his friends.

The films take the point of view of various people that were present during it, and as Ari recovers his memory of the events, we learn about one massacre that happened in which the israelians took a passive role as they watched : the massacre of Sabra and Shatila civilians by phalangists (see pictures)

This film disturbing. The People in it are telling their stories as they remember, felt and dreamed of it, and that confers to some scenes a poetic and fun touch, but right after someone dies and we’re reminded that it’s a war. Even the realisation made it that way, as some scenes (like scenes of death and battle) have a light classic music, that is very out of place. And some other scenes seems to be straight out of a LSD trip, plus the whole 80′s era (pictures related : one of Ari’s friend dreaming of being on a gigantic naked woman as the boat he was on explodes with his fellow soldiers on ; Ari seeing his ex-GF mourning over his tomb as he flies toward Beirut).

This film is awesome, but emotionally charged and the story behind it is really violent. Still, i do not regret of having seen it, and advise you to see it IF you can handle it. Don’t be fooled though, it is not composed of 100% of violence. As i said, some moments are really poetic.
