Representation is so important

One of my friend explained to me that she had difficulties to ship gay couples. She isn’t homophobic at all but doesn’t really see the ship even when it canonically is. And I think that it is for a simple reason : she haven’t seen lots of gay ship.
So it’s like if she haven’t learned to see how it works. Yeah, it the same thing than the others ships, but as she didn’t see it that much it’s like if her mind doesn’t make the links.
Like : a man hold the hand of a girl -> ow they must be lovers
However : a girl hold the hand of a girl -> ow they must be bff
Because that’s what it means in mainly representation.
Her mind doesn’t have any doubt, doesn’t know it’s not that obvious because people hold each others hands in different kind of relationship whatever the two genders are. But if some films/books/whatever would show that a girl sometimes holds the hand of another girl because they are lover, it would be easier to acknowledge the ship when it is. And not only. It would be easier to acknowledge that gay couples exists and are kind of everywhere. And easier to acknowledge that being straight isn’t the default and all.
That’s why I write most of my characters queer. Because, in fact, there are a lot of way to be queer, but only one to be straight, and for an unknown reason it’s this one which is everywhere. My characters are all different and attracted to people in different ways so everybody can have at least one of them to identified with.
